For example McAfee has the enterprise 8.0i out that does a great job on servers and workstations in general, but McAfee also has a Command Line scanner that's been used on email servers on the spool folder.
Would it make sense to disable the enterprise 8.0i on the spool folder and run the command line scanner on the solely on this folder,
or the enterprise 8.0i could handle both task better then having them divided between the two?

We run Symantec Corporate edition on our Imail server and it catches the viruses when the email spools. No need to invest in a dedicated AV solution just for Imail. We pay $230 a year for 5 servers.

No. By "desktop virus scanner", I'm referring to a virus scanner designed to scan files on a single computer (as opposed to a mailserver virus scanner, enterprise virus scanner, etc.).
McAfee, for example, has (had?) a Windows95/Windows98-only version of VirusScan (their desktop scanner). That ain't even gonna do ya no good on XP Pro. They do, however, have many versions of VirusScan that work on servers.
F-Prot, a favorite AV choice of many Declude customers, "just works". They don't have the oddball licensing issues that McAfee has, it isn't designed to not install on servers, the pricing is straightforward, and they don't have salespeople that used to work in used car lots. $40/year buys you 10 licenses, one for Declude Virus, with another 9 bonus licenses that you can either use or not.

Norton's a different story. They are the *only* AV company that has rigged their product to break when used with automated products (even if you try running it from a batch file or script, if it sees a virus, it will tell you that the file is virus-free!). And http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/columns/executive_tech/article.php/3316511 shows that they aren't really worth considering (out of 23 AV products tested, Norton (Symantec) came in 2nd to last in the amount of time to come up with new virus definitions).
Norton has excellent marketing, but is far from the best AV program.
