Roger - I'll answer best I can...
mac> I am trying to relate your mail server load to what we are currently doing
mac> on IMail.
mac> How many domains are you hosting?
On that server it's around 260
mac> How many emails a day do you process?
This is a pretty low volume server - between 10-20K depending on weekday or weekend -
my guess is 80-90% is
spam. Smarterstats does have nice statistics that tell you exact
messages, bandwidth and disk usage incoming and outgoing and for each
user.
mac> How many users?
About 1200
mac> Why is binding outgoing IP address important for what you are doing?
Well if it's an IP based domain I feel that outgoing mail should come
from that IP not the main server IP. Escpecially considering spf
records now would need to list the the mx and the main server IP's.
Also if some jerk gets the main server IP blacklisted that means
companies that have a dedicated IP for mail will have issues because
of the shared IP. This server is mainly for shared hosting customers
so it's not a big problem for me but I have had to keep two Imail
servers running for this reason. If all your domains a virtual hosts then it
doesn't really matter.
mac> Do you run a virus checker on your mail server? Any problems with
mac> SmarterMail and the virus checker?
I'm using Trend Server Protect - it does a decent job but it's no
where close to what I am used to using Declude. Basically, all it is
is setting up real time scanning on the spool directory and setting a
delivery delay for the spool. It would be great if Declude could get
invloved to integrate their product as that would make it incredible.
mac> Can you give your users ftp access to the raw mailing lists?
Well I haven't done anything like that but I don't see why you couldn't give seperate
access with ftp to the
domain directories. The directory structure is just by:
domain >
Alias
list
user
users
boxes
Stats
all the config files are just xml files.
It's all .net and allows calling the services to specify setup so it
should be very easy to script something to say add an ftp user (if
you're using a program like serv-u or bpftp etc.) and a list at the same
time. Since I use a control panel software that handles the remote
setup of SmarterMail, I never really add anything to the SmarterMail
server directly.
I'm about to transfer another Imail server this weekend that processes about 150-200K
messages a day so I can let you know how well that one
works sometime next week if you want to know. (I'm hoping it will go
ok, currently that Imail server doesn't do any spam or virus filtering
so we'll see)
Hope that helps.
