Just nit picking here but the "Well Known Port" 587 is assigned
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers as the submission port.

Assuming the RFC you're referencing is RFC 2476 Message Submission
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2476.txt it does not reserve SMTP AUTH for
use only on port 587, nor does it require SMTP AUTH to be used at all.

In fact, it doesn't even require authentication!

Section 6. Optional Actions states "The MSA MAY do any of the
following:" followed by

6.1.  Enforce Submission Rights

   The MSA MAY issue an error response to the MAIL FROM command if the
   address in MAIL FROM appears to have insufficient submission rights,
   or is not authorized with the authentication used (if the session has
   been authenticated).

"MAY" is not "MUST".
