I sent a roughly worded email (below) to a postmaster account. You'll never
believe the response I received! Will wonders never cease?

Dan

My message:

To me this is spam, I'll blacklist you if you don't cut it out. Bouncing
spoofed email is just as bad as spamming itself!

If you inspect the headers you'll see (Not in this copy, they've been purged
of any useful data!) that the original email did not come from my servers.
To see my acceptable server IPs, check my SPF records.

Software Projects, Inc.

His reply:

Sorry about the inconvenience, I was unaware we were bouncing viral
messages. I have changed the policies to reject them instead, so you
shouldn't get any more of these.

Brian

Subject: [IMail Forum] A plea to Declude users, stop backscattering

If you're using Declude (or any other virus/spam checker that happens
*after* the SMTP session is over) please configure it so it doesn't send
backscatter mail.

My domain occurring is in the RCPT TO, From:, Sender:, or Reply-To:
means nothing. They are all forgeable.

The only thing trustable is the connecting IP address.
