No you're not clueless and you've actually hit the nail on the head. It takes MUCH less processing overhead for Imail to give a 550 reply than it does to run Black Ice. It's hard to estimate, but I believe Imail could give out 3 - 400 550 errors in the time it takes Black Ice to block a single IP.

If you're running a heavy load on an Imail box you're much better off without Black Ice. I've tried it both ways and Black Ice is very slow and processor intensive compared to Imail.

I must be clueless (or my server has never been the target of a Dictionary
attack). How much processing overhead does IMail go through to give a 550
Invalid User reply? It shouldn't even get to the data exchange. Seems it
would not be very resource intensive. Of course, I'm running under 500
users, and they are in the IMail database. Maybe you are seeing database
latencies? But that should affect the front end processor too.

I must be missing something.

Dan

I have to agree with Len ... IMGate doesn't even show any signs of slowing during dictionary attacks, and saved my IMail server from bogging down.

I'm running IMGate on a 400 MHz 396Mb RAM machine with one ATA66 hard drive.
