It appears as thought Outlook (at least Outlook 2002) is setup by default to
download headers only. I am "Pretty Sure" the tech doing the testing hadn't
modified the default settings. When the test machine was returned to me, I
verified that only the headers should have been downloaded.

And yet, when I click on an email that contains a 1.2MB attachment, Outlook
essentially freezes the system. An email without an attachment is fairly speedy.

That makes no sense to me. If Outlook is truly setup to download the header
only, it shouldn't matter if the message has an attachment or not. I guess I
will test again and make sure everything is in order with the Outlook config.

Argh.

It should be part of the Synch settings...I know it's there somewhere...has
been since Outlook 1997...one of the main benefits of using IMAP4 is the
ability to just download headers

First of all, thanks to all of your thoughtful responses. This forum and its
members are truly outstanding.

Having received mixed responses on this matter, It seems there may not a
Lead Pipe best way of dealing with a 56k circuit and email delivery, but I
now have plenty of different options to evaluate.

I started by checking out the config of Outlook 2002 on our test laptop. I
checked on the "Download Header Only" option mentioned and Outlook 2002
doesn't appear to have such an option. I am going to check Outlook 2003 to
see if it has that option.

I will post back to the list as my testing progresses.

Thanks again,

Marty P.
