Dave,
As a Tucows customer since their first year, I can tell you that they
are in fact one of the most responsible and proactive companies
that I have ever come across (not just registrars). They aren't a
company that spends time trying to pump their stock on the market with
silly PR's, instead they are just simply a group of people that
overwhelmingly like their jobs and are talented.
You might have an issue with a circumstance that they aren't dealing
with in an optimal manner, but this by far doesn't reflect the company
as a whole.
Note that I only became a reseller for Tucows because I wanted to break
away as fast as possible from Network Solutions, which set a record for
poor customer service (3 hour phone waits with disconnects, and that
was when you didn't get a fast busy signal, and 30 day waits for a
registration to complete). I hardly make anything from reselling
registrations, and others provide services for less, but they give me a
great deal of control and it makes my life easier, and I won't be
changing any time soon.
I won't blame you for never wanting to do business with them as a
result of a bad experience, but I just wanted to add a voice to the mix
with an entirely contrary, and longer-term experience.

Tucows is horrible.
I have a guy that wants to move his domain to us. His current/former
host is/was also a reseller for Tucows. That hosting company has gone
out of business. The domain is locked so we can not move it and can not
change any of the registration info. I have called the Tucows "Legal
Compliance" office twice, emailed them three times and to say they are
unhelpful would be an understatement.
I would never under any circumstance do business with Tucows.
Nick, being a member of this list is probably different so sorry to
paint him with the same black corporate brush but that has been my
experience with Tucows.
