Subject: [IMail Forum] 2 MX records

Greetings:

We are in the process of trying to routing all mail to a new smtp gateway. I am getting lost in some of DNS issues and need clarification.

In the past we have always routed mail to host mail.clarksoncollege.edu at 65.174.229.137 with a  weight of 10.

As of Saturday I created a new entry in sprint's DNS servers called mail2.clarksoncollege.edu with an IP of 65.174.229.141 weight of 5.

Sprint uploaded the append/new zone files on the Dec 18 at Midnight. If the TTL is set for 12 hours on mail.clarksoncollege.edu we

should be seeing multiple entries MX entries for Clarkson. But I am not.

I am unclear to exactly what the TTL  is on the mx records is -- I keep seeing different values. I ran some tests Friday and I think it is 12 hours.

Can someone steer me in the right direction? Thanks.

ttl is the time the cached data is valid at any name server.  After expiration, the name server trashes the cached info and goes to the auth server to get refreshed data.  Changes to NS take some time to propagate on the internet.

I did a lookup for your dns entries and found that mail2.clarksoncollege.edu  is an 'A' record, not an MX
