The problem has since been resolved (this was nearly 2 years ago) by eliminating the IIS5 and GFi solutions, and moving to a strictly Imail based architecture. IIS5 had no way of discerning what email addresses actually existed from ones which were dictionary generated...Thus every time we got hit with a dictionary attack, the IIS SMTP died.

The original point of the topic was someone asking for opinions on a Windows-based SMTP gateway, I shared mine. IMHO, misguided as it may forever be, IIS SMTP is crap. :)

Cheers,
Sam

I think you need to explain exactly what it is you are doing on the that

be properly quantified, as it appears your configuration is far from normal,
and therefore your experience would be radically different.

It was IIS5 actually, taking email messages as the inbound SMTP server,
processing them for spam and viruses, then forwarding them to Imail. :)
Going by my experience, it was wholly inefficient. I congratulate you on
your marvelous statistic, but for my situation it simply did not work. Mind
you I could say I was being slightly inaccurate, as the server only got
overloaded once or twice a week, not in a matter of minutes. :)

Cheers,
Sam

IIS SMTP is only good if you have a betting pool where you're all
wagering on how many minutes before it gets overloaded and dies.

We pass a 1 million msgs/day through single MS SMTP boxes, so I'd say your comment is not borne out by experience. Maybe you're thinking of IIS 4.
