The original point of the topic was someone asking for opinions on a Windows-based SMTP gateway, I shared mine. IMHO, misguided as it may forever be, IIS SMTP is crap. :)

I think you need to explain exactly what it is you are doing on the that server as far as processing for spam and viruses so that your experience can be properly quantified, as it appears your configuration is far from normal, and therefore your experience would be radically different.

It was IIS5 actually, taking email messages as the inbound SMTP server, processing them for spam and viruses, then forwarding them to Imail. :) Going by my experience, it was wholly inefficient. I congratulate you on your marvelous statistic, but for my situation it simply did not work. Mind you I could say I was being slightly inaccurate, as the server only got overloaded once or twice a week, not in a matter of minutes. :)

We pass a 1 million msgs/day through single MS SMTP boxes, so I'd say your comment is not borne out by experience. Maybe you're thinking of IIS 4.
