All,

I am just curious if anyone else has noticed this, what I should make of it,
and if anything can/should be done in regards to a rather curious trend I
have noticed recently.

I've noticed that a growing number of mailing lists are ALWAYS being sent
via my secondary MX, or the MX with the lowest priority. Since my primary
has not been down at all, and my MX records are properly set up, this would
not only seem to violate RFCs but just doesn't seem like a "legitimate" way
to run a mail server. This is despite the fact that some of these are fairly
large mailing lists that are produced by what many people would consider to
be "legitimate" organizations like fredericks.com, bottomlinesecrets.com,
dvdplanet.com and moveon.org.

I've occasionally come across some accidentally misconfigured mail servers
at private companies that constantly seem to bypass my primary MX, but some
of these mailing lists are outsourced to rather large list management firms.
This would lead me to suspect that this activity is being carried out
purposefully on their part.

Is there really any legitimate reason for anyone to do this, and if not, is
there anything that can/should be done about these people in the way of
filtering? I am not familiar enough with RFCs to quote anything specific,
but it certainly does seem a bit "fishy" to me.
