Either way telnet is
a great troubleshooting tool. You may have to walk the end user through it
but it is invaluable.

A little OT, but how does a Mac user run Telnet?

For Mac OS 8.5 ~ 9.2 Better Telnet is an easy program to use.

For Max OS X go to the system drive, applications, utilities, "TERMINAL", type "telnet (hostname) (port)"

Mac OS X has many built in programs that were missing in previous versions.
