Cheers for the feedback - All the mail is already scanned for spam/ viruses before it hits the box and the box is a DL580 with 4 * 2GHz processors (the highest available for that version of the DL580) and we don't have the budget for a new one. The cards work out about a third the price of a new server.
but you need 1 card + spare card, since the card is critical to your mail operation. And the old IMail box is not wortless/useless
For the traffic that we have (200k messages / day, 6000 unique webmail users / hour) I reckon the encryption overhead would be too do it without either an external accelerator or some internal cards.
A 3+ GHz 32 bit CPU with fast RAM can't be so different in compute power from a h/w card. And remember that there is PCI i/o overhead/delay between the card and the main CPU.
You buy the 2 cards, and they're useless for anything else.
But if you build a no-name hottest PC for this job, and later the PC can be used for something else.
I always try to avoid buying special-purpose hardware if generic PC hardware can do the job.
