I've lived by the following...

1.  Dual processors min / Quad processors max (if you need more processors
get more servers and split the load)
2.  RAM 1 gig min / 4 gig max (if you need more again split the load on more
servers)
3.  Drives RAID either RAID 1 or RAID 0+1 (all other RAID levels are to slow
or don't offer any protection)

If you built a new mail server today, for a fixed budget, what would be your
priority on the following choices:

multiple CPUs
higher CPU speed
more RAM
faster RAM
more disk space
faster disk drives

Our company went through this process a couple of years ago, but it seems to
me that choices have changed, and that the requirements might be different.
For example, would dual Xeons be that much better than a single P4 at a
higher frequency?

Also, I wonder whether the answer would be different for SmarterMail?  We're
using IMail, but I'm just curious if the same logic would apply to
SmarterMail?
