They work as a 'any character found in this sequence'.  So, [abc] would catch 
anything with 'a' or 'b' or 'c' in it.

I guess I'll burn my copy of the 8.01 manual since it does not list on 
page 88 '[' and ']' as special characters.  I looked in the 8.1 pdf and 
found it listed on page 70.

What do they do in a rule?
