Bud-

I agree. In my opinion, IMAP is the only way to
migrate. I did something similar to import all the user
messages from Imail to Merak.

Merak has an interesting feature called Remote Accounts
(RA). Once Merak was live and accepting new domain
mail, I created and configured RA's to use IMAP, and
pointed them at the "current snapshot" of the old Imail
installation (now moved to a temp box inside the LAN).
Using IMAP, Merak Remote Accounts flawlessly duplicated
each IMail users existing sub-mailboxes (including
Imail's webmail SENT folders) into Merak and imported
30GB of email. All original Email headers and
read/unread info remained intact.

I've found the RA's also come in handy if you want to
periodically synch with an old POP3 or IMAP account
somewhere else (they can be auto-scheduled), or do an
entire remote Domain POP.
