Hi, Look at SmarterMail. SmarterMail is made in .NET and runs with an IIS. If a server is running on Windows 2003, all prerequisites for SmarterMail are fulfilled out of the box. The upgrade/patch of a system like this is quite easy and only one source is involved, meaning the usual patch collection from microsoft.
Using .NET give also the chance to create web services for IMail. Again, look at SmarterMail. The web service is quite cool. With a few lines of code made with ColdFusion or .Net, a programmer can extend the application quite easy. This might be the missing link to the lost API for IMail. Using PHP means, that a third party is involved into a product. This might be a drawback. To be honest, i think it's too late anyway. IMail suffers at least 2 years in technology. A new version based on .NET needs at least one year of hard programming. It's not an update of an existing software, it's a new one. This is a rabbit/turtle race, like we're saying in german.
