I have checked the clock and the timezone. The clock is correct, was correct yesterday and was correct the day before. All other system logs confirm this. The clock did not cause the sys0501.txt file to continue to be updated past midnight. At midnight, the sys0502.txt file was created as expected. Both sys0501.txt and sys0502.txt were being updated at the same time. At 9:56 MDT I rebooted my email server.
