Bruce -

It is a new day and I am planning on implementing your suggestion of
authentication. If I can ask your opinion, what would be the best way to do
this? Should I send out instructions to our user-base that says "on such
and such a day at 7am CST we will be implementing... Here are the
instructions for the major email applications"? Then just make the switch
and help out those who need it? Otherwise, if I attempt to contact everyone
to assist them then someone will not be able to send until I get to them.

Also, you mention that port 587 is already built in? Wouldn't I still need
to change the port (Advanced tab) to use port 587? I think that would be a
good thing to do while we are doing the authentication as well. Are there
any downsides? Would this also take care of my particular problem of when I
go from work to home and my ISP wants me to use their SMTP server (pain in
the a** to change every night/morning)?

Thanks again for your words of wisdom.

Todd

Todd,

We actually did this about 3 years ago and sent a mass e-mail out to all of the
customers, html format, with screen shots of the OUTLOOK 2000 (I would also
include shoots for Outlook 2003 and Outlook Express if I had to do it again).

The screen shots showed them where to click on MY SERVER REQUIRES
AUTHENTICATION - giving them step-by-step instructions to get there in the
first place. (In fact, I think someone else on this list has a page on thier
website that gives those step-by-step instructions.)

We then gave them 72 hours to update their configuration and "flipped the
switch" three days later, just before closing the office. We also put a voice
mail messsge at the beginning of the auto-attendant referring them to the
e-mail if they were having problems.

Over all, we only had about 6 or 8 users that hadn't followed the instructions
and we were able to talk them thru the settings over the corse of the next day.

As for port 587, only users with laptops or who use a client on their home
machines will need to use that port - and it's already set to force
authorization.

Good luck - change always takes people by suprise, but in the end, it's worth
the extra work to protect your network and stay off the black lists.

Bruce
