They will stay until deleted. I think you can use the immsgexp.exe utility to clean them out

imssgexp -tc:\imail\users -d1 -mimip.mbx

Where  -t = directory to start looking for the mailboxes recursively
           -d = number of days to expire by
           -m = name of mailbox <if left blank will do all>

I've been curious about the IMIP.* files myself.

Do they get cleared automatically by some IMail process or are they just
a  black  hole  to  lose  disk  space  in until someone notices them and
manually removes them.
