I've deployed a Symantec Brightmail solution, and after talking to the sales
engineers there, I learned interesting info on the Barracuda.

Apparently, this is more or less a white box pc with spamassasin, some
custom rules, and bayesian filtering. The effectiveness of this isnt quite
as good as some of the more commercial ones (ie Ironport and Brightmail).

This also talks to the DNS Black lists, so the effectiveness can be brought
into question when the blacklists are blocking legimiate people as well.

Brightmail uses a reputation based system, which monitors all the emails it
has received across all installations. I've sent somewhere near 60,000
emails with only 1 false positive (this mailing list actually). :)

As a plus, I can integrate with OpenLDAP on Imail 8.15 and use it for
disregarding email for unknown users.

We are using the 400 appliance and we love it. We currently have around
6000 email accounts using it and it stops allot of junk from getting thru
and stops the extra traffic on the actual IMail box. If you want a cheaper
solution, you could check out Len's IMGate. I do not have his link handy,
but it entails a small box running some *nix functions. Search the archives
and you will find all kinds of info on it.

Subject: [IMail Forum] OT - Anyone with Barracuda experience

Hello All,

I've got a friend of mine who is investigating using the Barracuda appliance
as a spam blocker for his mail server. He's offered to let us use it as well
for our mail server. Has anyone ever used this appliance? Any opinions on
this?

Thanks for your time. You can email me off list if you wish.
