But  this  doesn't  treat  the problem of having the same settings for
general  outbound mail and mail for smarthosted domains (I'm not using
the  term  "gatewayed"  anymore,  given  the  static mailroutes you're
limited to with HOSTS). The idea of the global "down domain" cache was
quite  cool,  but  I  believe  it  needs  to  be  paired  with a fully
compartmentalized   virtual   server   architecture   to   be   really
tantalizing.

Even  if  it  were  able  to  be applied to only specific domains, the
seeming  advantage  of  FDS  --  creating a longer queue lifetime that
lowers the priority of messages after encountering transient errors --
comes at the expense of lengthening the retry interval, which, IMO, is
the  opposite  of what you want to happen when smarthosting a customer
domain.  I  often set retry intervals of 15 minutes, 5 if supported by
the MTA, for dedicated secondaries. Having to delay retries is not the
way  to  increase sensitivity to downtime _as well as_ uptime. FDS may
useful if synched to the regular retry interval; setting FDS longer is
just counterproductive.
