I wonder why it works with so many mailers then?

I DID say the convention is to "do it right" and not to "confuse anybody",
but I believe I've successfully delivered mail that way, many years ago.

It doesn't matter tho, he's got a proper MX record now.

Never   seen   that   here   either.   It's   not   only  non-RFC  and
counterintuitive, but it would result in a giant waste of resources if
offered as an option.

The  correct  way to emulate such behavior is with a wilcard MX, which
has its own well-known caveats.
