It is VERY EASY to run a different binary that is also on your system! Many times, when "it doesn't work and none of what you tell me to try does any good", it ultimately turned out that the wrong binary was being invoked.
Even experts make this mistake. I've done it myself. The resulting wild goose chase is both frustrating and ultimately embarassing.... ;-)
A good way to verify that you are running the correct binary is to change the version string (it's a char *version in imapd and ipop3d) to something distinctive, and make certain that that version string shows up in the server greeting banner when you make a connection. Change the distinctive string each time you try a different patch, and verify the change when you connect.
