We do indeed have a c-client.cf file, which looks like it explains the new default ~/Mail folders.

Please delete that /etc/c-client.cf file entirely.

I recommend that, in the future, you get your updates of UW imapd directly from UW and not trust third party distributions. The fact that your distribution hacked the software in a non-standard way (and I doubt they told you that they it so) by creating a /etc/c-client.cf (which is non-standard by definition) indicates that they hacked it in other ways as well.

Sadly, there's no way you can tell how your third-party distribution has been hacked. There is little quality control on these hacks; and all too often, the third-party hacks will break some behavior that current users have come to depend upon.

Just as an example, I've seen /etc/c-client.cf file that set the mail directory being set to be "Mail " (note the trailing space). I've seen people waste *hours* trying to figure that one out!

I hope that eventually these open source distributions clean up their act. We could have done without the "freedom" to hack someone else's software and redistribute the hacked version without even saying that you hacked it (much less notify the original author of what was hacked).

Sadly, the result of the current situation is that a lot of end users get screwed for no good reason, and developers waste their time answering problem reports for problems they didn't cause.
