Greetings.
I have a problem where a mix format mailbox loses emails. The problem goes away when I use an mbx format mailbox, here are the details for mix:

after build mlock, mailutil and dbmail were copied to /usr/bin, imapd copied to /usr/sbin.
version: imap2006b and imap2006c latest development snapshot (Oct 22 2006)
test set of 1789 emails.
ext3 filesystem.

... delete the INBOX

# killall imapd
imapd: no process killed
# rm -rf /var/mail/domains/mclarkson/INBOX

... create a new INBOX

# su -c "mailutil create '#driver.mix/INBOX'" mclarkson

... empty mail.log

# :>/var/log/mail.log

... pump the mails in from another linux box
... postfix smtp server delivers using maildrop
... maildrop delivers using a pipe:
... to "|dmail mclarkson"
...
... mail.log shows dmail attempted to deliver all mails

# grep "delivered to /var/mail/domains/mclarkson/INBOX" /var/log/mail.log | wc -l
1789

... ensure mailq is empty and check message count

# mailq | tail -1
Mail queue is empty
# su -c "mailutil check INBOX" mclarkson
859 new message(s) (1483 unseen), 1483 total in INBOX

... different results each time:

# su -c "mailutil check INBOX" mclarkson
1496 new message(s) (1496 unseen), 1496 total in INBOX

# su -c "mailutil check INBOX" mclarkson
1515 new message(s) (1515 unseen), 1515 total in INBOX

... slow down the sender, things improve

1781 new message(s) (1781 unseen), 1781 total in INBOX
