Hey all, My name is Ed Pilatowicz and I work for Sun on OpenSolaris development. Currently I'm evaluating imap servers for use on a large internal development server.
Ideally, I would like to use the UW imapd server, but this isn't immediately possible due to it's lack of content-lenth support. I realize that we could configure sendmail not to use content-length for new mail, but this doesn't do anything for the large number of mail archives which currently contain content-length delineated messages. Even if I told my user community that they had to reformat all their personal mail files (which I'd like to avoid), this wouldn't address the problem for shared read-only mail archives for which I can't dictate the format. Hence, I think the best solution to this problem would be to add support for content-length to UW imapd. Not only would this solve my immediate problems, but it would also benefit everyone who receives (or has in the past received) mail on a Solaris system. I'm also willing to bet that there are Solaris users out there who may not even realize that this is an issue for them. Enhancing UW imapd to support content-length would remove one item from the UW imapd faq and allow things to "just work" out of the box for Solaris users. I imagine that this support would take the form of a patch (developed, tested, and deployed internally here on our server) that would eventually be merged into the main UW imapd tree. (And of course this patch would be subject to all the normal scrutiny, testing, and development processes that apply to any patches submitted for the UW imapd server.) But from my perspective, integrating this support into the base UW imapd server is critical since I don't think it's feasible to maintain a branch or patch for UW imapd server ad infinitum. Unfortunately, while I realize and accept that content-length is an evil reality that Solaris users have to deal with, I also also know that it can be a religious issue to some people and they may choose not to deal with it. So before I attempt to allocate any resources to adding content-length support to UW imapd, I wanted to ask the maintainers and developers here if you'd be willing to consider such a change.
