Altho I agree with you about Courier not-IMAP, uw-imapd is from the
University of Washinton (in Seattle Washinton USA). Washington University
(in St. Louis Missouri USA) is a completely different institution about
3500Km away and known for a completely different software package
(WU-FTPD).
Courier not-IMAP is the results of one individual, I don't know of any
institute of higher education that would claim it.
