The inbox was created correctly, by conversion with mixcvt (the recommended way). I also used mailutil during the tests. The clue was that I addressed it as "{imap.server}~/INBOX" instead of "{imap.server}INBOX", or simply "{imap.server}". Problem solved, thanks to Joel Reicher's generous help.
