Good catch, Rob! Indeed BIS isn't handling the empty mailbox case... here is the full results of their "trace test". They barf on the "BAD" response. That should not be happening....!!

Well, remembering how bb's mail service works, the device isn't connecting -- but the hosted BIS service does all of that, so it should be device model independent.

From the look of the exchange, it looks like your IMAP server is responding as very well it should. Though, it bothers me a bit that the exchange shows that the BIS IMAP client isn't acting very clueful -- for example, why should it even be trying to do a FETCH when it's obvious that there aren't any messages to fetch? How does it behave when there are messages in the IMAP mailbox? This could be an edge case that the BIS mail service doesn't deal well with -- most people have things in their mailboxes ;)

A bit more details. The device is an 8310. The account is being configured using the ATT/Blackberry website (bis.att.blackberry.com). The error message is given by the website, and all it says is "An error occurred during email account validation. Please check user info and try again." The trace below is what seems to happen during the "account validation" (captured by RIM), and yes, there is no email in the user account.

[I did delete and recreate the user account, and it works with both TBird and POP clients.]

Indeed at that moment the mailbox was empty. But the Blackberry service returns some sort of error in this case and also when there is mail present. I am able to see (and read) mail using both IMAP (using Thunderbird) and POP (using Outlook). But the Blackberry is unhappy and says there is some "error in connecting to the mail server" (I don't have the exact text in front of me.)

I will try deleting and recreating the mail user and see what transpires. Any other suggestions out there?

Hmm, can you read the user's mail with another IMAP client?

The response of "0 EXISTS" seems to make me think that there's no mail to be seen...

Used to work until very recently. The user can no longer get email from her RIM Blackberry. Here is a trace of the failing session. I have no clue what the problem is. Any suggestions?
