The IMAP specification explicitly requires requires that a server NOT
remove a name from the subscription list even if the mailbox is
deleted.  There is a separate step required to remove a name from
the subscription list.

Try to get Thunderbird to product a transcript of the IMAP protocol
negotiations.  Once you have that, search for an UNSUBSCRIBE
command.  If you see an error message from the IMAP server for
the UNSUBSCRIBE command, that should indicate what is wrong.

If you see no UNSUBSCRIBE command at all, then you need to
gripe to the developers of Thunderbird.

Actually, you should gripe to the developers of Thunderbird for
using subscriptions at all.  There is no excuse for them to do so.
