I'll second this.
We've used UW-IMAP on FreeBSD and SLES for years now and have migrated
from mbox (a couple of users) to mbx (100 users) and then on to mix (100
users again). We're not a big site by any means.
mix is great. A big improvement on mbx and so far from mbox it's hard
to describe. mix is also easy to fully backup and/or do incrementals.
I did some testing with maildir and while the IMAP performance was OK
the backups were a pain. We have users here with 10s of GBs of email
and thousands of messages in a folder so we like indices.
We use Thunderbird as a mail client BTW and have played with the IMAP
client in Android.
