I was able to compile and install uw-imap without any real difficulty. However
last night, when I was testing the email, I went to add another user using the
GUI tool, since I'm not that familiar with all of the Solaris command line
tools.
It was then that I discovered that it would only let me add a user with no more
than eight characters. In searching the net, I found a post where it said that
if I added the user via the command line, it would complain about it being more
than eight characters, but would go ahead and add it anyway.
The users that have names longer than eight characters would only ever log into
the system to check their mail via either SquirrelMail, or the mail client on
their workstations. It's not like they'd ever actually log into the system
itself.
So, my big question is, from a uw-imap perspective, have you had people post to
the list in the reasonably recent past that have had problems using uw-imap with
long user names on Unix systems? Or do any of you have any experience in using
long user names on Unix systems for email using uw-imap?
I'd just like to know if am I likely to run into problems if I use the command
line tool to add user names longer than eight characters, or if I'm reasonably
safe continuing with this endeavor.
Any advice or experience shared in this area would be greatly appreciated.
I've used UW-Imap for over 10 years on HP-UX, Linux, and BSD. Old versions
of some OSs had issues with long names (HP-UX from 20 years ago), but it
was the underlying OS & tools, not UW-Imap's fault.
Never had a user with a name longer than 32 characters but had a few
over 24 characters.
