All that's necessary is a client author with a piss-poor attitude and the
programming skills to match. Someone like the author of... no, I'll be
polite. It's not an IMAP client, anyway.
If <omitted> were an IMAP client, it would open sixteen IMAP connections,
select the same mailbox (I can hear you protesting already, Mark) and
maximize its share of the available bandwidth by issuing sixteen commands
simultaneously:
FETCH 42 (BODY[TEXT]<0.16384>
FETCH 42 (BODY[TEXT]<16384.16384>
FETCH 42 (BODY[TEXT]<32768.16384>
...
