Sort of.  We actually run a load balanced system across 2 F5 BigIP load
balancers.  The login account information is stored in a directory
server (e.g., OpenLDAP) and the passwords are stored in there with SSHA
encryption.  We only run LDAPS and IMAPS so the password isn't sent "in
the clear".  PAM and NSS allow all the machines to view the account
information in the directory server so we, essentially, only have to
maintain one password "file".
