100MB is much too large to be a "sensible size" for a mailbox in traditional
UNIX format. In traditional UNIX mailbox format, the server must read the
entire file to locate the messages.

Even the complete archive of the IMAP mailing list is only 39MB.

I suggest that you consider switching to the mbx format, as described in FAQ
question 4.5 of the UW IMAP FAQ:
        http://www.washington.edu/imap/IMAP-FAQs/index.html#4.5

In many cases, such large mailboxes are not because the user has very many
messages, but rather because they have some very large messages due to MIME
attachments. If that describes your situation, then use of mbx format will be
especially helpful in increasing performance.

If you have any further questions, please ask them on the
        [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailing list instead of the IMAP mailing list. The IMAP mailing list is
intended for discussions about the IMAP protocol and not for software usage
questions. Thank you.
