If John has one IMAP session and appends a message to mailbox B, and Jack has selected the same folder B in another IMAP session/connection and issues NOOP straight afterwards (John goes "now!" and Jack goes "NOOP!"),
Can Jack expect to see the EXISTS response about a new message in his connection immediately after John sees the tagged OK?
