Why not imagine a new protocol to go with it? IMAP is the Internet Message Access Protocol. It is neither intended nor suitable as a protocol for access to every imaginable class of data. The arguments you have presented seem most applicable to things that are not messages (houses, bank accounts, web pages); therefore, I see no reason to change IMAP to accommodate them. -- ams
