Just looking through the SORT specification, and it occurred to me that
there's no way of asking the server to return just a subset of the mailbox
(or if there is, I apologize in advance for missing it and wasting your
time).
Rationale: A very common use of SORT, I suspect, will be as part of the
implemention of view-based fetching, where only the details for the
messages that are currently visible to the user are fetched. In this kind
of situation, it would be potentially useful to be able to say to the server
"Please sort the mailbox by these criteria and return the items from 55 -
85 in the result list".
With only very small folders the impact of this may be insignificant, but
with very large folders, the return from SORT may be quite large: since
view-based fetching is most beneficial over slow links, this kind of return
limiting would offer a potential performance return in that case.
Thoughts?
Cheers!
