In fact, using a transactional database for the metadata part of the store
is the right thing to do for large stores.

The whole things is determined by (1) the type of metadata you are going 
to store, (2) the volume of that metadata and (3) the real world existence
of sharing.

Not to belabor the point, but we found that the real world use of shared 
mailboxes wasn't really driven by users (humans) but by automated monitor 
programs (queue monitors, automated handlers etc.)   Interestingly, 
sharing in these instances is driven by high volume.
