This is a very silly argument from two camps catering to different software production ideologies: Design vs. Demand.
If I'm only concerned with designing an email client, then IMAP is perfect. If I'm only concerned with selling an email client (ie. Selling to demand), then something like Exchange, Groupwise, Notes, et al, is perfect. One unit of measurement to help you figure out which camp you're likely to be in is to determine how much you're willing to pay per email client (and support, maintenance).
