Yes, it should.
Given my understanding that you have implemented this, I am wondering what you *did* have the server return.
The implementation that I did was a very bare-bones proof of concept. I didn't have code to handle this case, and I suspect it would have just dumped core, or something equally evil. In my own server implementation it will work as I described.
