You're asking the wrong question.  What if foo/bar is created, and then
deleted.  The Cyrus attitude is that there is no placeholder.  The UNIX
filesystem attitude is that there is.

That's not correct. Cyrus will display foo as \Noselect for LIST "" % , it just doesn't show foo/ for LIST "" foo/%
