The user can't give you anything other than the error message?  They
can't glean anything from the banner or find any documentation?

The server is at the user's ISP. I've looked at it, and it is rather uninformative as to its implementation. It calls itself "MailSite IMAP4 Server 5.3.6.0" (I think that MailSite is the name of the ISP;

I believe it's the server software's name. Google produces several links, such as:
