Why did you issue a CLOSE command? Did the server expunge message 1 (UID 12) as a result? It's actually alright if the server didn't expunge message 1 (UID 12); the server has the right to disregard an EXPUNGE. But the client intent is different. I'm pointing this out because it may indicate some confusion on your part.
