I've noticed at least some versions of Outlook Express issue
IDLE commands before selecting a mailbox. Our server currently
rejects this request, although it is apparently perfectly legal
according to RFC 2177. If we fix our server to allow IDLE
in the authenticated state, the client will never receive
anything since we only send unsolicited messages in the selected
state. I've read the archives on this (starting with
http://www.washington.edu/imap/listarch/1998/msg00677.html ), but
still have no idea why a client would WANT to issue an IDLE without
selecting a mailbox. Clearly, at least some other servers
send something in this state - but what?
