That is all specific to how IMAP server's internal mailbox format works. There are several IMAP servers and some of them can work better in such environment than others. This list is about IMAP protocol, so I think the whole thread is off topic. Anyway, for the last year I've been slowly making my server work nicely with remote/distributed filesystems and it's finally beginning to work. Most of the read operations require no locking at all (probably all soon) and write locks are for very short periods, so doing the locking with files isn't too bad either if you don't have working lock daemons.
