I don't have a strong opinion and am not into the development of the programs, 
but will happily contribute to the pollution of this list :-)

Since you've been using SQLObject for a while you already know its weak sides. 
So perhaps it'd be a good idea to write a message to sqlalchemy mlist, 
explaining the situation and imdbpy requirements.
These requirements are:
*) Capability to add indexes after database population
*) Full Unicode support
*) Stable support for major databases (start with SQLite, Postgresql, MySQL)
*) Interface stability
*) ... Add your own here ...
