Guys.

not quite IMGATE but our server is imail!, however, since you lot know email workings
so well, I ask for help.

I am having a issue here. Below is the full conversation so far.
Basically, we send an email to gspfareham.co.uk. The dns resolves the primary MX to a
server that doesnt work. we are unable to get emails sent to them. The reply back from
glyn is supposed to be the answer but I dont get it. Is this a config error on our
imail server? my lack of experience or what.

Your advice and help is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Aaron

Hi,

I have checked the details in your email and can confirm that this
configuration is not unusual. The primary MX record is set to
mail-backup.gspfareham.co.uk, which will be processed by NewNet in the
event of a failure. As this is not currently active (bourne out by your
tests), the servers at NewNet will direct to the secondary MX record,
which is the live system at Gyoury Self. The failover only works if you send email
via DNS, or direct send to
post.newnet.co.uk. If direct send is employed to the mx record either
via host name or IP address, the failover does not occur and mail will
not flow. I am assuming you are using the latter method of
communication on your mail server. If you have any comments on this, I
would be happy to receive them.
At this stage there are no charges for our customer as this falls under
our free support remit, but should further investigations or
reconfiguration be required, time would be incurred from their block
time agreement with us, and I would need approval to continue.

Subject: ref. gspfareham email problem

-------------- Original Email ----------------------------
Hi David / Nigel,

Thanks for sending over the failed message details. From these, I can
determine that the mail is not leaving the PSC mail server. Delivery is
being attempted but not succeeding and thus the failed delivery message
is created. In this instance, I would advise contacting the Postmaster
at the college to trace the problem. The only fact I can think of at
this stage that may assist the diagnosis is that both Gyoury Self, and
ourselves use NewNet as an ISP. NewNet have no reported issues at
present, and I can confirm receipt of mail from other sources. They do
block reverse lookups on their mail systems, but normally this is an
issue for sending rather than receiving.

Hope this helps. If you require further information please let me know,
and we will see if there is anything else we can do.

Regards,

Glyn Balsdon

Glyn,

I have investigated the problem with regards to us not being able to
send email to gspfareham. You are right in saying that the emails are
not leaving the college. This is because the primary MX does not work.

As you can see from the results below. I have got the Mx records from
the dns entries, then have tried to telnet port 25 to the primary MX
(mail-backup.gspfareham.co.uk), this failed. After trying to connect
from 3 different sources, I can only assume that this server is down.

However, The second Mx does work, So we are curently mapping all mail
for gspfareham to this address. This will provide a tempory solution
until you can fix this.

Regards

Aaron.
