I'm still amazed at the gain from PCRE, so have you implemented that? Is disk i/o really the bottleneck? iostat -c 40 in mid-morning or afternoon show a lot of traffic every second? iostat showed me that syslogd actually doesn't write out a line at time, but buffers quite heavily and dumps in chunks.
