Both of which are very good reasons not to rely on the external gateway for
all anti-virus protection. You need it on the mail server also.  Although
you should also have it on the desktop, the mail servers should be set up as
if no one else has any antivirus and it has to do it all (so scan incoming
and outgoing messages, both).
